Though he may've gained notoriety in the seedy nightclubs of Brooklyn and Baltimore, Lenny Bruce's formative comic experiences were in front of tough but appreciative Catskills audiences. Born Leonard Alfred Schneider, Bruce eventually gravitated from borscht to bohemia, tackling subject matter that hadn't been dealt with before on stage. Today, the Milton Berles and Henny Youngmans may seem more "old world" than the jazz-riffing, freewheeling Bruce, but the taboo-breaker cited his background much more than the comedians preceding him. In "Religions Inc.," Bruce impersonates Billy Graham, Oral Roberts and Rabbi Stephen Wise at a boardroom meeting on Madison Avenue. His impression of Wise is as genteel as Groucho's Bankhead. On the phone, Bruce (as Wise) assures the Pope: "No, nobody knows you're Jewish."
