Very Nice Indeed
Lenny White's music is almost like funk-jazz lite. Along with the prerequisite funk bass and electric guitars, he incorporates more traditional jazz components with piano, strings, muted trumpet, saxophone, Fender Rhodes, and organ with some occasional vocals and (sorry to say) rap. His drumming is confident and convincing without over-doing it. He does allow himself to shine with a drum solo on "Chatter." On this album, he has two remakes of songs - Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" and Frank Sinatra's "It Was A Very Good Year." Kashmir is good but it tends to get on my nerves a bit; but "It Was A Very Good Year" is nice, I thought. Also on the plus side, I find Lenny's work more cool and casual sounding than other artists in this genre. In essence, there are good things and not so good things, but in the end, it's all good. I love this album, especially on travels, and I would recommend it to anyone who listens to the likes of Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Chick Corea, et al.
