i actually came to emusic searching for leo kottke because I heard his guitar playing on NPR - I am pleasantly surprised to have found him here. I like this as much as the instrumental stuff - they'll both have their own separate place on my ipod

Hummable virtuosity

I love this album. "Twice" and "Vaseline Machine Gun" are just terrific tunes, and his doleful version of "Corrina Corrina" is up there with Taj Mahal's rendition. Some don't like his voice, and he's a fairly limited singer, and those people will find plenty of terrific instrumental Kottke on this site. But for me the languid vocals are the perfect counterpoint to his phenomenal finger-picking.

They Say All Music Guide

Working with former Prince sideman David Z, Leo Kottke comes up with one of his most unusual records with Standing in My Shoes. David Z doesn’t necessarily bring Kottke toward funk, but the spare rhythm section gives the guitarist a stronger sense of groove than ever before, and Kottke really shines in such a setting. His solos are loose and swinging, and even his trio of vocal numbers have a charming, carefree quality. Standing in My Shoes does bog down occasionally, particularly when the execution is more compelling than the material, but on the whole, it is one of his more fascinating records of the ’90s. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
