Chichester Rocks!!

cbeck83

The "Chichester Psalms" recording here, as far as I am concerned, is THE definitive recording, and not least because it was conducted and recorded by Mr. Bernstein himself. For me, the boy solo makes it, if nothing else. Too often that solo is sung by a female soprano or a less-than-capable boy soloist. Such is not the case here. As an earlier reviewer noted, one of the piece's charms is the use of "odd" meters, that Bernstein somehow manages to make sound absolutely natural (unlike some other composers using the device). The music complements the Hebrew text of the Psalms quoted with incredible power and sensitivity. A most incredible and wonderful work!!

Incredible work

Colbert

This is not West Side Story, but amazing modern choral work, all in Hebrew by the way. The Chichester Psalms are not only very striking modern melodies and harmonies but for the most part are in meters such as 5/4 and 7/4.

Icon: Leonard Bernstein

He was the smooth populist, as articulate about music as he was with it,… more »

In fact, he was so gifted He seldom felt uplifted, Just undefined. Poor Lenny, Ten gifts too many, The curse of being versatile . . . Bernstein overflowed with so… more »
