Gotta disagree

Verdunguy

Our reviewer above says very few bands have ever rocked out in French. But Les Breastfeeders play garage, based on a long tradition of loud and nasty French language working class rockers who rarely ever were heard outside of Quebec. Just because people in France can't pronounce their language in a way that sounds right with a guitar and drums behind it doesn't mean that Quebec French rockers haven't been busting windows and wearing out the linoleum for forty years! This is a fun band to listen to, loud. But it's also a band from a long tradition of loud and gritty rock and roll.

Catchy as all hell

Just download this. Even if you can't speak French, you'll try and sing along phonetically.

Great band for the car or a party

My boyfriend introduced me to Les Breastfeeders this summer and since then I haven't been able to stop listening to them. Their fun, unique, and literate. I can't recommend this CD enough.

With the exception of Telephone and Plastic Bertrand (who, to be fair, was Belgian), few artists have truly rocked out effectively in French. Add Montreal garage rockers Les Breastfeeders to that list; building on their already strong debut album by toughening up their sound and downshifting on the most blatant ’60s references, Matins de Grands Soirs is a fist-shaking piece of scrappy power pop that would be a breathless delight in any language. Having the lyrics in Quebecois French indeed may be a benefit to non-Francophone listeners, since verbal acuity is rarely the point of this brand of three-chord punk-pop. Regardless of the language barriers, however, the spunky kick of a song like “Viens avec Moi” is infectious and undeniable, as is the Ramones-like shang-a-lang of “Funny Funiculaire” (one of several songs featuring the just plain adorable girl group sound of singing guitarist Suzie McLelove). – Stewart Mason
