Solid with moments of greatness

dresac

A cassette of Lily's former band, the Colorifics, came into my hands ten years ago--a free giveaway from a local college radio station. The music on the tape, all original, had its own timeless jazzy aesthetic. I loved Lily's vocals, but at the time couldn't find any other of her recordings. Lily does a good job on this album of jazz standards, often evoking Billie Holiday, but with her own style. Her version of "I've got my love to keep me warm" is the nicest I've heard--her voice floats like a feather, accented by tasteful clarinet and glockenspiel licks. Don't hesitate to download at least that one song....

Canadian songstress Lily Frost pays earnest homage to the heyday of the swing era. Recorded live in mono and accompanied by the Swinging Dukes, an upbeat swing band, Lily Frost brings new interpretations of lesser-known Billy Holiday songs; she has a melodic, sweet voice and the arrangements of banjo, breathy tenor sax, low sweet clarinet and trumpets evoke the comfortable and stylish atmosphere of a jazz den.

Lily is lovely

Lily Frost reminds me a little of Eleni Mandell. They are two eclectic singers, and like Eleni, her last album could be classified as jazz-pop music. The canadian songwriter is covering songs from lesser-known Billie Holiday repertoire. "Lover come back to me" is my favorite track of this highly recommended album.
