Little Brother, The Listening
2002 | Label: ABB Records / The Orchard

Almost everywhere there's been hip-hop, there's been a bohemian-minded backlash, and the South is no different. Little Brother — a trio who met in college in North Carolina — were conscientious objectors just as Southern hip-hop was hitting its commercial and materialistic peak. Taking cues from A Tribe Called Quest and Pete Rock, they paired soul-dappled beats with airy, common-man raps — they shine on "Away From Me," a song about fatherhood denied. (If the verses get you down, there's also an instrumental version — producer 9th Wonder became a favorite of the Roots '?uestlove and was later tapped by Jay-Z.)

Classic

T-bone78

Hip-hop classic. Couldn't get 'Light It Up' (on the 12' single for "whatever you say") out of my head first time I heard it. Had to grab the album a minute later.

An Underground hip hop Classic

Bunneh3000

9th Wonder (producer) was at his best and laced this entire album with his best Pete Rock/J. Dilla imitation that still managed to define his own style. It has definitely paid off for him since Jay-Z himself hand picked a number of tracks from him for "The Blueprint" and "The Black Album". As if a response to the state of hip hop, probably one of the biggest tracks of note is the title track, "The Listening". Within, 9th spins bits and pieces of Pete Rock & CL Smooth's "They Reminisce Over You" in the background to set the scene for a confession of sorts. Phonte and Big Pooh show how fans of theirs and of hip hop in general seem to pay more attention to the beats than they do the actual lyricism. Thanking 9th for his skill, they both weave a tale of how they came to the world of rockin the mic in a way that is vivid and visual. Beautiful track...epic. No doubt... this entire album is what hip hop needs! Get this album and the rest of LB's efforts!

A return to real hip-hop

donprater

Since groups like The Bush Babees and the Tribe have stepped away from the game over the past few years, there has been a creative and lyrical void in hip-hop. LB and the Justus League and a groups like J-Live and the Strange Fruit Project fill that void well. I hope they drop at least an album a year from now on. They are the perfect combination of tight beats and inciteful rhymes.

Like a mix of De La and J5

TFox

Strong lyrics, great laidback beats. This is about as mainstream and digestable as underground hiphop gets. This isn't a slam, it is hard to make a record of this depth and making it sound like a summer cruising record.

I can't say enough about LB. They are what hip hop used to be. Creative, superb and lyrical. (Hows that?)

They Say All Music Guide

In Little Brother’s music, the North Carolina group makes a specific point to highlight the more refined aspects of mid-’90s hip-hop. Basing its 2002 sound upon the foundation previously established by the likes of Pete Rock, A Tribe Called Quest, Jay Dee, and Black Star, Little Brother makes somewhat of a political statement by applying such standards to this modern age. The Listening does an exceptional job of proving that soulful meditations have indeed retained their traditional relevancy within the contemporary realms of rap. 9th Wonder’s production leads the charge with distinct drum kicks pacing larger-than-life melodic samples, which are often enhanced with sultry female voice-overs. Meanwhile, Phonte and Big Pooh dig even deeper within the hip-hop vaults as they draw upon classic routines by the likes of Rakim, Slick Rick, and Audio 2 for their lyrical inspiration. Whether engaged in storytelling, braggadocio, or simple reassurance, the rhyming duo complements 9th Wonder’s varying shades of mood music with a consistent degree of skill and sincerity. The album both starts and finishes strongly, with “For You,” “Speed,” “Nighttime Maneuvers,” and the title track serving as its most stellar moments. Despite its unavoidably derivative orientation, The Listening is a finely crafted musical document, composed by artists who want nothing more than to provide even just a glimpse of hip-hop purity within an ever-expanding maze of cultural deterioration. – Robert Gabriel
