Sultry Voice
I was watching 'The Secretary' when Chariot's Rise came on. I was shocked. The voice sounded like Natalie Merchant's from her heydays with the 10,000 maniacs. Although the 10,000 maniacs was a little before my time, once I discovered their music, I scooped up everything I could find, including some of Merchant's solo stuff. They made such hauntingly beautiful music. I couldn't believe that there was a song of Merchant's that I wasn't even aware of, especially such a poignant one. But when I researched the lyrics, it led me to Lizzie West. I'd never even heard of her. I can certainly vouch for 'Chariot's Rise' as being quite the unexpected find. In fact the Lizzie West - EP album has all the folksy instrumentation accompanied by the poignant sentiments that I had come to associate with the 10,000 maniacs . . .
