Along with William Alwyn, I first discovered the music of this contemporary British composer through his Lyrita recordings, and they remain an essential part of the education of anyone who wants to better understand the course of English classical writing after Vaughan Williams in the mid 20th century. Not only that, but the music is stylish, witty, never outstays its welcome, and sounds newly recorded, not something decades old!
