Hugely exciting.....

I was blown away by this performance. Maybe Serebrier doesn't always equal Beecham's romantic flair but but he is still excellent and this has to be the most physically exciting performance ever and the recording is sensational.

Masterful, undistinctive, sonically spiffing

Serebrier is a master of repertoire such as this, and it is almost surprising that he has not previously recorded the main work here. There are no disappointments: the LPO is responsive and the interpretation is clean and straightforward without being uninvolving. What it lacks is any particular distinction to put it at the front of a pack containing the likes of Beecham and Reiner, for instance. The overture is notable for being bright and zestful, without the turgidity that can sometimes drag down readings of this work. The Watford Colosseum recording is predictably excellent, showing fine range and presence in a nicely spacious sound picture – almost too good for I-Pod listening!
