Powerful if dryly recorded
I would not have associated Sir Colin with Bruckner. However, with the LSO he directs a sympathetic reading, full of the necessary power and sensitivity and also showing a keen awareness of the symphonic strength of this most intractable of Bruckner’s symphonies. The LSO’s playing is responsive, not to be taken for granted in an English performance of this composer’s work. The recording is a slight snag, since, whilst accurate enough, it is really rather too dry for Bruckner, although some might actually prefer the lack of resonance.
