This album is no substitute for the original recording—nor is it even the second version you should consider purchasing (that would be one of the live performances by the Who from 1969-1970). But it does make a nice addition to the mix. The contributions of guests artists Steve Winwood, Richie Havens, and Merry Clayton are especially fun. The one missing track, by Rod Stewart, can be purchased elsewhere.
I have this Album on Cassette from sometime ago. If it makes the album worthwhile, you can get the Rod Stewart track from the Best of Rod Stewart Album for $0.77 from 7Digital and still be way under budget compared to other full album downloads.
And itunes will only let you download Pinball Wizzard with a full album download. I thought I could add it for 79 pence, but it'll cost me in effect £7.99 for one three minute something track after 24 downloads on emusic.. I won't do so at such a cost....
It does not appear to be an eMusic oversight as Amazon is also missing PW in their MP3 version.
Pinball Wizard (performed by Rod Stewart) is missing. Contractual reasons or has emusic missed it off? It's the signature song!
If you like a little symphony mixed with your rock, this is a pleasant mix. Better quality, I think, than the movie sound track. I have this album in vinyl, bought it in '72. I don't really listen to my vinyl very often and haven't gotten around to transferring yet. So it's been a long time since I've heard this version. Aside from the original by The Who, I have to say I like this version next best. The orchestral arrangement is a little light for my taste. Vocals are good. I had to check out Amazon.com to get the year of issue and see that original vinyl version is going for a hefty price. Hopefully those collectors are enjoying it for the music.
