Little known outside the Lone Star State, Long John Hunter was a giant figure in the El Paso music scene of the '50s and '60s; locals like Bobby Fuller would cross the border into Juarez, Mexico, just to see the blues guitarist rip it up at the Lobby, the toughest nightclub in town. Hunter's party piece involved swinging from the rafters with one hand while playing guitar with the other, but Ooh Wee Pretty Baby — a killer collection of his early recordings — proves that there was more to the man's reputation than just crowd-pleasing showmanship. Falling somewhere between T-Bone Walker and Johnny “Guitar” Watson's King Records period, “Ride With Me Baby,” “The Scratch,” “Grandma” and “Slash” are just some of the tastier-than-Texas-BBQ treats within.
