Dazzling

tom-at-the-drums

An enormously strange and beautiful piece of work, just like the label says. With refreshing boldness, it goes beyond the usual jazz conventions, though it always comes back to it. John Lurie conjures up some pretty dazzling sound tapestries with his Alto which are almost magically echoed by the brass section. Many stylistic surprises come from the guitar, base, and drums. Sophisticated compositions, virtuoso musicians, and true innovation. This album has it all.

for years i've had a copy of this album on tape and played it to death and learned the bass parts, or as much of them as i could. My tape seems to have vanished, but here it is on emusic, i'm happy again!

They Say All Music Guide

John Lurie’s so-called “non-jazz” approach is in full flower on this fascinating record. The ever-growing (nine-piece at this point) band builds layers of rhythm and melody with unique effect throughout. On “The Birds Near Her House,” a serpentine melodic line weaves through a steady rhythmic bed, building to a frenetic climax. “Scary Children” is a foreboding dirge that still manages to exude true humor. Perhaps that is the most significant aspect of this music: it has real character and life. It doesn’t just groove — it starts a conversation. – Tim Sheridan
