Heavy Handed Bach
Foss definitely has his own ideas on how Bach should resonate in our minds. Rather than playing the piano with a delicate touch ala Gould, Foss pounds away providing the listener with a new, if not a bit paranoid, way of hearing Bach's keyboard masterpieces. It reminds me somewhat of Bernstein's version of the Matthew Passion (Boom, ba Boom.) Yet I come back to this recording day after day, enjoying it more, and hearing it freshly played. I would recommend this album to any Bach enthusiast, particularly to those who believe in the purity of the score, techniques, and instruments. Bach is beautiful from many different viewpoints and interpretations, even when the playing is a bit "heavy handed."
