A turning point

JamieH

This album marks the point where Madness completed the move away from their ska roots, that had begun with the previous album 7 (also available here), into a more complex territory, exploring the note of melancholy and doubt that had had always been there, but had never been so freely felt as it is here; they became, in the process, unquestionably one of England's finest ever pop bands. High points are the singles, Our House, and the less celebrated but no less well-crafted Tommorow's (Just Another Day), as well as the excellent Blue Skinned Beast and Primrose Hill. Well done Salvo for re-releasing this expanded version, and what a wonderful surprise to find this, the work of a major label band, here on Emusic.

They Say All Music Guide

Salvo’s expanded 2010 reissue of The Rise & Fall has a wealth of bonus material. The first disc contains promo videos for “House of Fun,” “Driving in My Car,” “Our House,” and “Tomorrow’s (Just Another Day).” The second disc has a wealth of extras: a four-song Kid Jensen Session; the non-LP singles “House of Fun” and “Driving in My Car,” along with their B-sides “Don’t Look Back” and “Animal Farm,” as well as “Riding on My Bike,” which was on the flip of the “Driving” 12″; an extended 12″ mix of “Our House,” plus the B-side “Walking with Mr. Wheeze” and the U.S. instrumental mix “Mad House”; the Warped 12″ “Tomorrow’s (Just Another Day),” plus its B-side “Blue Beast [Warp Mix]” and a version of “Tomorrow’s” recorded with Elvis Costello; the DJ promo single “Our House [Stretch Mix]“; and, finally, there’s “The National Anthem,” the capper on a very generous deluxe reissue. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
