Not Miller's Best

jazzbase

I love Marcus, but I didn't listen to Silver Rain nearly as much as The Sun Don't Lie and Tales. As for Marcus being second to Mark King. I don't know if anyone should go that far, and I absolutly love Mark King's playing. I mean come on now, Miller has been on over 500 recordings as a first call studio musician for the past two decades. Is he even 45? Again I love Mark King, but I don't think he would be able to produce Miles Davis, or score movies

Not 4 Me

lazo

Apparently Mr. Miller cannot play bass without slappin' and poppin'. I know it's a very large part of his style but he only abandons the slap and pop on a couple of the ballads and then briefly. This disc is barely more than a smooth Jazz release. The whole smooth Jazz genre is a farce as it has absoulutely nothing to do with Jazz. It is lightweight instrumental music. Jazz it is not. The only tune on the whole disc that deserves a listen is the Hendrix inspired "Power of Soul". This guy played with Miles. What happened? Miller has realized that he can be a Jazz bass player and live a comfortable existence or sell out and live like a King. And speaking of Kings. Marcus will never be more than #2 because Mark King is the best Slappin' and Poppin' bass player ever.

emusic scores big-time

This is a must-have album for bass players or lovers of jazz, rock & pop with a funk accent. Veteran music industry bassist, composer, and producer Marcus Miller is totally on top of his game with an album about half originals and half covers. These are mostly instrumental along with three vocal tracks, including the title track co-written and sung by Eric Clapton. Good variety of musical styles, including a slow-blues shuffle version of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata."
