A third Prokofiev 5 from Naxos!
I was curious to hear the new combination of Marin Alsop with her Sao Paulo orchestra. The first movement feels quite restrained but also quite monumental. I was concerned that it might be another 'bland' Alsop reading at this point but it is a reading that gains in stature as it goes along. I have heard more malevolent scherzos but the slow grind back to the return of the main theme is really sarcastically done and the movement really catches fire at this point. The third movement is really beautifully played and Prokofiev's astringent harmonies are actually very well illuminated by the sumptuous playing of the SPSO. Plus, with this release you get the suite, 'The Year 1941', which for Prokofiev geeks like me is a big plus! Great, bombastic stuff.
