Mass Shivers’ Contoured Heat is an album that sits somewhere at the nexus of post-punk, math rock, and guitar psychedelia. Many of the songs have a highly polyrhythmic approach, but they’re catchy and melodic at the same time. The tunes are often anchored by Andy Johnson’s basslines, freeing up drummer Sean Wilke for some intricate and inventive drum patterns. Guitarist Brett Sova has a knack for layering complementary guitar parts and is certainly well-acquainted with his effects pedals. If you like surging polyrhythms, walls of guitars, and tuneful soloing, give a listen to Contoured Heat. – Sean Westergaard
