Lords of the Underground: A Guide to Underground Hip-Hop

By Hua Hsu, eMusic Contributor

"Underground" is one of those tantalizingly vague terms that's always on the verge of obsolescence until some mouthy, hungry new rapper comes along and reanimates it. Whether it was being dismissed as a fad, derided as a menace to society or ascending the pop charts, there's always been a distinct way in which hip-hop has represented its underground ethos — the long-repressed reality straight from America's cities on one hand, or a new set of… more »

Active Child Talks Classic Hip-Hop

They Say All Music Guide

Knowing Master P’s scrappy entrepreneurial past, it’s a safe bet that ReMix Classics was constructed to grab some piggyback sales. The collection’s release falls a couple weeks before the Universal company’s Best of Master P, a compilation of P’s golden years — years P himself no longer has the rights to release. All that said, ReMix Classics may not be the most inspired release and it does show signs of being slapped together in a hurry, but these are great tracks, pumped up by a 21st century thump. Production on “Get Em,” “Cooked Crack,” and “Thugettes” is bassy and busy but still retains the No Limit gutter feel that gets the Southern hood bouncing. Everything’s retitled to keep the lawyers happy (“Thugettes” is an updated “Thug Girl,” and so on) and old crew members have been replaced by new, interesting or disappointing depending on whether or not you expect P to “keep it real.” He just wants to party and relive some memories on ReMix Classics, and if anyone buys this collection in error, they’ve at least got a fun update with plenty of reckless weekend music. – David Jeffries
