Comfortably resting on their laurels
2011 | Label: Reprise

Since forming in 1999, Mastodon have made some of the most challenging and exciting mainstream metal albums, fusing classically-informed riffs with heavy-ass pummeling and twisted storylines loosely inspired by Moby Dick and fantasy fiction. The Atlanta, Georgia, quartet are the undisputed kings of the genre, able to appeal to a broader audience than devil-horn-throwing biker bros. But with their latest record, they’re comfortable to rest on their laurels — and it suits them.

Unlike breakthrough albums Leviathan or Blood Mountain, The Hunter doesn’t have any overarching storyline or concept — a welcome relief — and Mastodon dial back the prog-rock tendencies to deliver a fairly straightforward hard rock record. Credit goes to producer Mike Elizondo — who also happens to be an A&R exec at the band’s label, so it makes sense that he’d try and clean up their sound in the interest of SoundScan numbers. To wit: The hot, skull-crushing “Curl of the Burl” might be the group’s most straightforward single ever.

But Mastodon aren’t major-label droids — they actually sound like they’re having a genuine blast and frontman Brent Hinds has said in interviews that he hasn’t been this excited about a Mastodon record… read more »

The "fun" Mastodon album

smilani

Great album of individual songs not revolving around a particular theme or story line, which is a departure for Mastodon. This appears to have let the band loosen up some and make an album that almost could be called fun. The album is a great listen all the way through, each track coming and going before it wears out its welcome.

Mushroom Metal

thurzTG

The first track from “The Hunter”, “Black Tongue”, is a good primer for the rest of Mastodon’s most recent album. While there is no flagrant deviation from the band’s distinctive balance of brains & brawn, the song ends surprisingly swiftly, flowing seamlessly into the so-called-single “Curl of the Burl”. The following track, “Blasteroid”, will have you thinking it might be the bastard child of the unhinged early days of Van Halen & that Sonic Youth album you listened to in college. Then the chorus comes along & rearranges your face just for thinking about it. Listening to “The Hunter” is more like traveling in the offspring from a ménage a trios between the space shuttle, the Merry Prankster’s Further Bus, and the multi-armed car from Spy Hunter. Enjoy the ride!

Kicking at the Boundaries of Metal

By John Wiederhorn, eMusic Contributor

As they age, extreme metal merchants often inject various non-metallic styles into their songs in order to hasten their musical growth. Sometimes, as with Alcest and Jesu, they develop to the point where their original vision is at least partially consumed by their new sounds, and their albums feature as many or more elements of post-rock, prog, hardcore, alternative, industrial or jazz as they do metal. Regardless of the genres in which they dabble, acts… more »

Who Are…Hull

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

Late last year, the Brooklyn band Hull released Beneath the Lightless Sky, a seething, lumbering monster of a metal record that contained within its elaborately-mapped sonic tunnels the story of Mayan brothers on two very different life paths. Their songs are epic in every sense: Most of them push well past the five-minute mark and contain deliberate leitmotifs, multiple movements and repeated melodic themes. As you might expect, they're not ones to stick to a… more »
