A sterling DJ mix from one of the most respected minimal techno producers around.
2006 | Label: Soma / PIAS Digital

One of the handful of Chilean DJ-producers remaking mid-'00s minimal techno in their own fecund image, Luciano is an equally adept producer, laptop performer and DJ. The latter is showcased on this prime, frenetically squiggling set. As with any good mix, the whole equals more than the sum, but many individual moments shine: the rain-on-tin electro-snare breakdown of Tadeo's “Bateria Lup!”; the bottomless kick drum and nagging pulse-riff of Matt John's “The Rising Scope”; the shifting layers of dubbed-out hand percussion of Ricardo Villalobos's “Ichso”; and most of all, the cavernous bass drops of Samin's “PG23,” 2000 and One's “Sunday” and “Father,” a collaboration between Luciano and Thomas Melchior.

21 Credits for a Single CD?!

TheMystifyingOracle

eMusic - bite me. Full albums should just be 12 credits, period. If this was in the store for USD $21 you bet I'd skip it. That said, Michaelangelo Matos got this one mostly right... while it doesn't stand up to Villalobos' work, it's definitely up there and one of the better suggestions in his "microhouse" editorial, unlike the Super5 or Cocoon compilations, which are complete drek and have nothing to do with microhouse - now, or its history - if anything, they show how "glitch" and house were a reaction to bad German Electro/Techno. But rather than spending 21 credits on this, go check thinnerism.com - tons of great minimal German techo, for free, much of it as good or ever better than this, which starts out great but starts to fall apart at the end, with inconsistent tracks that don't mix well. That said, if you can download it for USD $12/12 credits, it'd be worth it.

like something youd hear while doing yoga on a space ship near neptune. or something youd see being sold at the register in a hipper Starbuxxx back in 1998. Mellow, and fun but kind of boring as well. Nothing groundbreaking, but nice.

great techno/house compilation!

This album is an overlooked gem of microhouse from Luciano, a compadre of Villalobos & fellow ex-Chilean. The collection starts off spartan and percussively minimal, but slowly builds to become more rhythmically and sonically ornate. Similar (but superior) to Richie Hawtin's DE-9 Transitions long version, this electronic gem is meant to be played without breaks between cuts. So if you are using iTunes or an iPod, be sure to set the album to "gapless" to get the fully seamless musical effect. The album also works best when heard continuously from beginning to end; give yourself the luxury of the 80 minute album length to fully appreciate Luciano's creative sound palette and cohesive trasitions. Highly recommended!

Tumble...

I just can't get over of the ability the typical eMusic fool, such as myself, has to simply to trip over some of the most well spun tunes - this collection is a great sample. After reading some woody's depressing review of Underworld's current apex in the music industry, I clicked on a link to Richard Villalosbos, which lead me to this great stack. Well done!

Dance Mixes

By Todd Burns, eMusic Contributor

Tom Moulton just didn't get it. In the early '70s, he was on Fire Island, watching a DJ spin 45's and just as everyone seemed to be getting into the groove of the song... bam! It was over -- only to be replaced by another song that took at least a minute or two to build up the same sort of heat. Inspired, he took action: he started to cut up tape of his favorite… more »

Microhouse and Minimal Techno

By Michelangelo Matos, eMusic Contributor

Techno has often been minimal by necessity. House music has too, as often as not. But when a handful of artists and labels began putting out the stuff codified by Philip Sherburne, in a piece for The Wire in September 2001, as "microhouse," it felt momentous — a real shift in the dance-music firmament, one that satisfied inward-looking laptoppers and gotta-dance club children equally. For one thing, rather than the severity of lots of stripped-down… more »
