Although he has now retired from performing (temporarily, we hope) due to an arm/shoulder injury, Maxim Vengerov is one of the most gifted and expressive violinists of his generation. Classical music purists may frown on this kind of collection of crowd-pleasing movements and short compositions, which have been recorded by lots of other violin soloists. But no one can argue with the beauty and authority of Maxim Vengerov's playing. He is a rare classical soloist who conveys the sheer joy that he takes from playing the music, and he doesn't always play it safe - he takes chances, which carry us to the edge along with him.
