I had to travel distance down a cold Canadian highway yesterday, and this music made an incredible driving soundtrack. It's full of echoes - with touches of 1970s Rochereau drfting though Jamaican dub to smart, current electronic music. It's also a grounded 2015 piece of Kinshasa music. The rhythms are rich, the ideas surprising and the results extraordinary. A lot of recent Congo-Kinshasa music suffers from smooth overproduction that guts it, but whoever produced this understood what it could be. Hip hop, dub, electronic, dance, rhumba, golden age of Zaire music - it's all in here, but not as the soulless soup much World Music fusion becomes. This music jumps out, grabs you and drops into a series of hard grooves that take you places. Brilliant.
