A punk-rock lifer's look at mortality
2011 | Label: clenchedwrench / Finetunes

The word critics most often use to describe Mike Watt's music is "elliptical", which should give you some idea just how difficult describing his music is. Ever since his time as bassist for punk/funk legends Minutemen, Watt has specialized in music of evasion. Most punk rock barrels forward; his music is a constant sideways skitter. His songs never take the straight route, but they still manage to get where they're going faster than anyone… read more »

Mike Ubu Watt and his Magic Band

JBB

This is a great homage to Captain Beefheart, Per Ubu and other Dada Rock bands such as his own Minuteman.

Best Album I've Heard In Years

thundercurtain

Watt has always had the talent and originality, but this collection of 30 songs has it all--and the man finally proves he can sing and sing well, with very moving sincerity. Not one bad song. I wish the songs were all longer! This album is worth spending hours with. Haven't played it in my car yet--gonna love it on long drives. Thank you, Watt. Us old guys still have some heroes left who pour their hearts and souls into their work.

Pure Watt

VegetableFarmer

Watt is a true original and a damned talented one at that! I had the privilege of seeing this album performed live with zero breaks for applause/etc. Seeing it in that context just hammered home how amazing Watt and the Missingmen are (I dare say better than the Minutemen in their heyday). This is one of the best records of the year and one of the best of Watt's career.

This Is Your Life: Mike Watt

By Douglas Wolk, Contributor

One of the treasures of American punk rock, Mike Watt has been pounding the bass since he played with Minutemen in the '80s. He's still touring and recording nonstop, with a seemingly infinite succession of bands and projects. He's also a great natural talker — or spieler, as he puts it in his one-man argot — and his idea of the relationship between recordings and performances is a bit different from a lot of rock… more »
