The proggier side of psych folk
Even in a crowded psych folk scene, Mike Wexler manages to sound different from pretty much anyone else. Though the slight frogginess of his voice might bring superficial comparisons to Joanna Newsom, Wexler is mostly gloomy dusks and eerie dawns where Newsom is partially sunny spring afternoons and starry evenings. Wexler's sophomore effort leans on his clear Bert Jansch influence, but not too heavily, and also suggests a lot of prog rock listening, even though the instrumentation is sparse and mostly acoustic. And much as in prog rock, the lyrics largely concern the fantastic, except that Wexler is clearly a real poet and not just a guy who read too many b-novels.
