Osmo Vanska, BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 9, "Choral"
2006 | Label: BIS

Again from Osma Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra, here's the crowning glory of Beethoven's symphonic achievement, a huge 80-minute creation that culminates in the first use of voices in a symphony. Again, this is a thrilling journey, from the mists of the opening where the strings dart about to the moment when the soloists, orchestra and chorus join together in a call for universal brotherhood. The rhythmic vitality of the Choral Symphony —… read more »

Downloading track 4 (4th movement)

The eMusic Download Manager appears to be having trouble with the link or track name (at least on Mac), but temporarily disabling the Download Manager and clicking Retry to download track 4 manually works fine for me. Hope that helps others! eMusic, please fix the DM!

downloading 4th movement

btw - vanska's beethoven series is genius! I had no problem downloading the 4th movement but needed to change the file name to import into itunes as it is too long... just delete part of the file name... this should work even prior to downloading

Can anybody tell me how to download the 4th movement - I've tried and retried...still not happening for me. Can it be that difficult???

...but like Noteworthy1, the 4th movement failed to download even tho' I've been charged for it.

Turn it Up!!

Nice performance but the mix is really quiet compared to other versions. I recommend Philippe Herreweghe's version over this one.

My pick

Beethoven's Ninth is a work I've managed to collect; I must have half a dozen different versions on disc, at least. It's worth comparing how different conductors interpret the work, but for me, this is the one I come back to again and again. Vanska's entire sympony cycle is incredible (and I highly recommend moving on to his Sibelius interpretations), but this is a crowning jewel. You owe it to yourself to check this out.

A brilliant recording of an essential work. Add this to your collection...TODAY!

Superb, artistically and sonically

This presentation of Beethoven's 9th is an exceptional modern recording: sonically robust, and nuanced and ferocious in its presentation. Hat tip to Vanska, whose scholarship and artistry with regard to this work are obvious and appreciated. Am looking forward to more from this conductor and this orchestra.

This is one of the best albums you can get. That is because Beehoven was the best composer of his time and he is still one of the best in history, including today.
