Not that I've heard any other recording of the Copland 3, but I picked thie one based on a recommendation from rec.music.classical.recordings on the basis of the fact that it makes the form of the music perfectly clear. It really does.
My first introduction to this music. I've been hesitant to approach much of Copland prior to especially the ballets but after the mindblowing account by these players of the Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances - music I knew well but had previously not much liked I thought I'd try this. On multiple hearings I feel Oue has introduced me to the deeper fabric of this symphony The consequence is that upon arrival at the fourth movement the fanfare theme seems almost inevitable. The Mahlerian credentials of this orchestra stretching back to MItropoulos are still well preserved and in evidence here in the type of sound produced. I woudl recommend this disc on artistic as much as audiosonic grounds.
