I listen to a lot of Brazilian music, and Monica is my favorite vocalist (and Voadeira is one of her best two albums). Why is she my favorite? The song selection and arrangement. Beautifully crafted, spare arrangements, each different and appropriate to the song. She covers different Brazilian genres and chooses well. Mostly she does quiet pieces with a wonderful melancholy, but also does very fun feel-good tunes. I do like the samba singers - Beth Carvalho, Clara Nunes; the breathy intimate style of Rosa Passos; Marisa Monte's Rose and Charcoal has some great tracks; Luciana Souza's Brazilian Duos is wonderful vocal-guitar duets. (Some of the other stuff is too pop for me, e.g., Bebel Gilberto). But Monica is consistently good and creative.
