Monolake, Silence
2009 | Label: Imbalance Computer Music / Iris

Monolake is actually the project of one man, Robert Henke, who makes haunting, forward-thinking dub techno. On Silence, his seventh release, Henke’s sonic palette is as stark as ever: sub-bass throbs, spidery, metallic percussion and gaping bits of, well, silence. The Monolake sound is the slightly more jittery, more experimental cousin to dubstep breakout “star” Burial: harrowing, unnervingly beautiful music that will make you feel scared to go out alone at night.

Monolake is decent

I almost made an impulse purchase and bought the whole album because I love the album art, which reminds me of the Autechre "Amber" cover. I instead purchased "Infinite Snow" to give it a listen. It is good, but not great. I listen have been listening to electronic of music for most of my life, so I'm quite particular about it. I work at my computer a lot, so I like richly textured electronic music with no words to keep my brain awake as I work. I prefer Funckarma and Gescom, but that's just me. Everyone has their own taste. The sound here reminds me of some Arovane circa 2000; there is not a lot of transformation throughout the songs...a few new beats kick in as the songs develop, but overall not enough is happening to keep me terribly interested. I will listen to it two or three times and then forget about it.

monolake's best

Joseph93

henke continutes to reach new heights in sound design, rhythm, and subtlety. It is often said that good music can be appreciated even in shit quality. While this is often true, Silence does NOT sound good on most equipment. Even decent headphones or speakers will not do this one justice. But on a great sound system this thing is unbelievable and transportative. 9/10

Not really that special

scottphillips

Sorry, I think this guy's work is overrated. It's all pretty straight forward stuff with little regard to texture and layering, nor emotion. There's no mystery here. And Henke uses too many beats, for me, and the beats he uses are rather ordinary and clinical. There are just so many other electronic artists out there that do this kinda stuff a whole lot better. Dig deeper friends.

Shhhhh...

If you're talking you're not listening. First blush to admire the landscapes it will transport you to. Second blush to appreciate the subtleties that brought you there unnoticed on that first journey.

Well worth it for Monolake fans

This is a bit different than earlier Monolake releases. An excellent step in a new direction. Monolake fans will be pleased for sure.

Scene: Berlin Techno, 2000s

By philip sherburne, eMusic Contributor

Berlin couldn't have turned out more remarkably had Italo Calvino merely imagined it as one of the improbable burghs of his book Invisible Cities. When the wall that divided it for 28 years finally came down in 1989, Berlin underwent an anarchic renaissance that has left it unlike any other western capital. Reunification gave the world a city full of empty buildings and abandoned lots but almost no industry - just politics and culture, pent-up energy… more »
