Not bad, just not coherent

jgregor

About half the tracks are good, Morbid Angel style death metal. As a previous reviewer said, these tracks remind of "Dominion" and "Formulas...". Then there's the controversial stuff. Tracks 2 and 11 are hardcore techno, though strangely you can still tell it's MA. It's as if Chthulu has been transformed into a mechanical-tentacled manga monster. Not bad if you like that sort of thing. Then there's a slew of tracks with silly and/or self-referential lyrics. "Desctructos..." sounds like something GWAR would have written, and "RADICULT" is like Body Count. For me, the problem isn't the experimentation in other genres of music, it's the overall "feel" of the album. Morbid Angel albums used to exude a feel of diseased evil, dark dimensions populated by the ancient ones. This feels like an album of odds and ends - the serious and silly, traditional and experimental, all mashed together. It seems to lack the coherency of a proper album.

Pioneers of Death Metal get experimental

Carlosram78

I have to admit, Morbid Angel's last few albums were not compelling to me. The last one that really blew me away was 'Formula's Fatal to the Flesh'. Now on 'Illud Divinum Insanus', Morbid Angel brings back David Vincent, and bridges the gap between 'Domination' and 'Formula's', while adding a new twist on a few tracks: Gabber Hardcore Techno. Truth be told, only tracks 1,2,7 and 9 have any techno elements!! "I am Morbid" is a mid-tempo hard rock stomper, while "Existo Vulgore" is one of Morbid Angels finest tracks ever written. "10 More Dead" is a sludge filled freight train that would fit perfectly in "Domination". Morbid Angel have crafted their freshest album in years, and while it may have raised the ire of death metal enthusiasts, those who appreciate and welcome experimentation will be rewarded by this album.

What?

With all due respect... Why would they call this Morbid Angel? Somebody might like it, but probably not Morbid Angel fans. Listen before you buy.

Not your typical Morbid Angel sound.

HellbillyGT44

This album is a million miles away from anything they have ever done, save for a couple of tracks that sound like true Morbid death metal. I know it is getting destroyed on every internet post that I have read. My advice is if you like "old" Morbid Angel, you will probably not like this one. Personally, I liked the album, it is by no means great, but it is not nearly as bad as everyone is making it out to be.
