Mose Se “Fan Fan” has recently reinvented himself as a veteran acoustic rumba icon, but this best-of captures the earlier, electric phase of his career. The tracks are drawn from three different periods — a pair from 1970 show him in his role as Franco's second guitarist, four as part of Orchestre Makassy with vocalist Remi Ongala in Dar Es Salaam from the late ’70s, with the remainder coming from the time he lived in Nairobi. It's rumba on the road, showing how well it can travel in the right hands. Fan Fan is obviously influenced by Franco but is also very much his own man. The whole collection sizzles, but nothing tops the version of his theme song, “Suki Pembe Somo Somo.” Recorded in Kenya, it illustrates his technique, heavy on chorded solos, that builds and builds over the course of nine minutes to an explosive, melodic climax. A stunning exploration of rumba fretboard joy, melodic and intoxicating.
