As part of the Legends of Jazz series put out by Eclipse in 1995, a compilation was devoted to Charlie Parker titled Bird of Paradise. Like the other recordings in the series, the artists other than Parker are left unbilled, though from the sound Dizzy Gillespie is definitely present for the recordings. The album luckily enough has some of Parker's earlier compositions ("Billie's Bounce"), as well as later compositions by others of the bebop movement (Gillespie's "Bebop"). Also included are a few variations on Gershwin pieces: "Chasin' the Bird" and "Moose the Mooche" are both based on "I Got Rhythm." Other great works from Parker's career finish out the album, such as "Relaxin' at Camarillo." Overall, not a bad choice, especially considering the low price (often new for less than two dollars), though fans of Parker, or bebop, or jazz in general may want to step up to a different collection, perhaps Verve's Bird: The Original Recordings of Charlie Parker.
