How do you call your loverboy?

  • We Say...

Three decades before the survivors of the New York Dolls resurrected themselves in the shadow of their immense legend, the original group was on the last legs of its victory lap, though it hardly seemed like a victory at the time, beset as they were by internal cataclysm (drugs and personnel difficulties) and lack of commercial acceptance.

Still, they never let us forget that there was a moment — after the Velvet Underground and the Group Image split up and Cat Mother went rural — in New York rock & roll when there were no local bands, or places to play. One day in late 1971, I saw a flyer on the wall of Village Oldies, where I worked slinging 45s, advertising an appearance by the New York Dolls (who?) at an arts center located in an old hotel located a couple of blocks away. I went there and fell in love, L-U-V.

In Paris, on their final go-round, they're playing their beloved hits to an audience that not only hails the songs but wears them like a badge of honor. In truth, there was not much progression in the Dolls' sound: they wrote short, catchy proto-hits and the arc of their instrumental proficiency didn't expand exponentially. They weren't much changed from that instant they stepped out of the bicycle shop on Columbus Ave. where they got their start, on their way to a peculiar kind of superstardom. Thank de Lawd and Little Richard.
