  • They Say...

The Shangri-Las' awe-inspiring girl group sounds aren't easy to anthologize. Many labels have tried and not many have succeeded in producing collections that do the group and the listener justice. Synergy try their hand at it on 2004's Leader of the Pack and actually manage to achieve a modicum of success. The group really only had three chart hits, the deathless "Leader of the Pack," "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand") and "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" and all three are here along with some of their other classic tracks like "Give Him a Great Big Kiss," "Out in the Streets" and "Heaven Only Knows." It is hard to argue for the exclusion of any of the 12 tracks Synergy included but they left off some darn good songs like "Train From Kansas City," "He Cried" and "What's a Girl Supposed to Do." So while the disc works as a rough introduction to their sound, the listener is only given a slice of what made the group so wonderful, The only really definitive Shangri-Las' collection is RPM's 1994 release Myrmidons of Melodramaso if you want it all, or most of it anyway, in one shot, you need to look for that instead.
