Pretty popsters step away from the microphone

Is there anything to indie rock's new obsession with off-mic vocal swooning? It's like bands want to go barbershop or bubblegum but aren't sure exactly how, so instead we get these earnest shouts and hollers that are more Beach Bums than Beach Boys, but still loveable nonetheless. The lead-off cut to Birds Make Good Neighbors, "Hold Hands and Fight," like the Arcade Fire, Animal Collective and a hundred other bands further along the alphabet, does just this, its chorus a cute string of "ohowoahWOAH" seemingly coming from offstage. So what, right? Well, yes, except that Rosebuds singer Ivan Howard has an absolutely tremendous voice, and there's no reason for anyone else — even the capable keyboardist Kelly Crisp — to so much as peep when his '80s new wave smooth-croon makes like peak Ian McCulloch on the swinging "Boxcar" and pretty much all of this very-good record. (Producer Brian Paulson, who has worked with Slint, Uncle Tupelo and virtually every good North Carolina band ever, deserves serious kudos for the job he did on this album: he mic'd Howard perfectly.) Birds has more than its fair share of balladry — not their strongest point, but "Let Us Go" and "Warm Where You Lay" are beguiling — and that's the closest thing I can find to a flaw. Highly recommended.
