Superstars they may be now, but it wasn’t always thus…

  • We Say...

Legend has it that Snow Patrol adopted their name after a bizarre incident when police found them trying to chop down a tree on a ski slope in Colorado — which is as good a reason as any to make their acquaintance. Superstars they may be now, but it wasn’t always thus and this second album dates back to the time they were struggling for a break while living in Glasgow. There’s a persuasive innocence about its bruised songs of reflection and regret, but while angsty melancholia is its overriding mood, they still sound like a band who mean serious business. Their Irish credentials may not be immediately obvious in the dark shroud of an album which initially appears to owe more to Scots bands like Belle & Sebastian than anything Irish, but in the occasional outbreaks of strident guitar and bombastic vocals there’s a clear lineage back to U2.
