The seminal post-rock group Tortoise employs three percussionists to fill out its experimental sound. With all that manpower, ideas, notes and sketches are inevitably discarded along the way. Enter Bumps, in which head land turtle John McEntire leads his drumming associates (John Herndon and Dan Bitney) in crafting a 23-track beats and breaks record for the hip-hop/funk imprint, Stones Throw. The beats and breaks here rarely last more than 90 seconds, allowing the Bumps crew to simply play out the pattern enough times to get into the groove and then abruptly abandon it when it gets stale. Even so, there’s plenty of variety to be had: “A Dumb Month” and “Exponent Memoir” both sound like they were recorded in an empty factory building on a 2-track, “Nashira” has a latin flair and “Tryplmeade Gorsmatch” even swirls some electronics into the mix.
