Newgaze band faces difficult realities, finds the beauty within.

  • We Say...

On their third album, Film School downplay warbling guitar noises and focus more intently on melancholy songwriting. Oh, they've still got a bubbly bag of shoegazing tricks (wafty girl vocals, cascading swells of distortion) and they're not afraid to use 'em. But while the effects were once crutches to make mediocre music compelling, now they're elements to make good songs sound better — and sadder. "Two Kinds" combines a New Order-style bassline with a weary melody worthy of Catherine Wheel; "Dear Me" features somber vocals, hazy guitars and an urgent beat before erupting in a radiant pop chorus. "Sick Hipster Nursed by Suicide" merges the bleak romanticism of House of Love with the wobbly instrumentation of My Bloody Valentine. Rather than escaping through sound, Film School are now facing difficult reality and finding the beauty within.
