Electronic luminaries have fun with Thom Yorke's voice.

  • We Say...

Thom Yorke's love of electronic music should no longer come as a surprise to anyone who has followed the career of Radiohead's singer. But if the rumors that Yorke purchased the entirety of Warp Records' catalogue in the lead-up to sessions for Kid A sounded like the ramblings of an idioteque, Yorke's 2006 solo effort The Eraser further cemented the connection: few guitars found their way onto the record. Instead, listeners were met by skittering beats, a couple of bleeps and a smattering of bloops.

Thus, in this first EP of remixes from the record, it's easy to understand how the participants fit into the Yorke aesthetic. Dubstep doyens (Burial), German jokesters (Modeselektor) and electro-freak folks (Various): who would make more sense? Burial cuts up Yorke's voice into a disembodied wail, before surprisingly letting his vocals run (mostly) unaffected over his desolate, rain-swept and syncopated landscape. Various also play games with Yorke's voice, stuttering and mangling until it's little more than a cog in the IDM machine. But it's Modeselektor that comes out on top. The group eases Yorke over a head-nodder not dissimilar from the one they gave him for their own album in 2007. After listening to Yorke toast, you might just find yourself wondering whether he might consider a future in hip-hop, too.
