Cellist gets pretty, pissed

  • We Say...

Ben Sollee, cellist of the string band Sparrow Quartet, goes it solo on If You're Gonna Lead My Country, a digital-only EP and teaser to his upcoming full-length. The sound here is aggressively spare -- mostly Sollee's fluttering vocals and cello, with occasional tapped-out percussion. The sheen of prettiness on these tracks almost buries the lead here: Ben's a little pissed.

On "A Change is Gonna Come," Sollee mixes generic Beat-era rallying cries (see: song title) with some shots at the military industrial complex ("There's no rhyme or reason/ No sweet melody/ More and more weapons mean less security"). It's a little odd to hear political potshots on such a reserved tune, espeically once the song takes a jazzy left turn and fades out on a wispy trumpet solo. With his voice pushed dead front in the mix, though, Sollee is clearly looking to get his message across with only a spoonful of sugar.
