  • We Say...

Peter Bradley Adams once formed half of the duo EastMountainSouth, whose delicately harmonized version of "Hard Times Come Again No More," was featured in the soundtrack to Elizabethtown. It's a breathtaking rendition, and while Adams' solo venture is a little less folk-ed out and exists without that feminine touch, Leavetaking is just as musically delicious and establishes Adams' worth as a solo talent.

Each song is chock full of poetic lyrics carefully placed over subtly rolling guitar or piano chords. On "Los Angeles," Adams personifies and eulogizes the Californian city in striking terms, "Well you carried us in broken dreams/ Like a mother does her sons/ We were scattered 'cross your dirty streets/ We were dying one by one." On "Keep Us" he outlines a similar message of hope in despair, "There's a lesson in the rain that change will always come/ Let us ride this wave and then greet the sun." Whether you listen closely, or simply let Adams' beautiful delivery envelop the senses, Leavetaking will prove to be a stunning exercise in singer-songwriting.

  • They Say...

Roots rock that leans more towards the easy listening side, which could also very well possibly appeal to the young pups due to its modern production -- you could certainly say that's a fair assessment of the second full-length effort by Peter Bradley Adams, 2008's Leavetaking. In a time of popular music where an increasing amount of new releases are becoming more and more slick, it's a pleasant surprise to hear stripped down music -- focusing heavily on Adams' breathy singing style and understated guitar and piano playing. This aforementioned approach that Adams specializes in is probably best sampled on the album opening ditty, "The Longer I Run," while he also offers such "late night listening" tracks as "Keep Us," and even replicates Rufus Wainwright's signature vocals (that is, if Wainwright was a guitarist rather than pianist) on "Under My Skin." Leavetaking would provide the perfect soundtrack at your favorite local coffeehouse.
