This Icelandic one-man-band somehow manages to channel various music traditions, bundle them into a single album, and do so convincingly. Mugison's output ranges from the metallic “Mugiboogie,” to “George Harrison,” a track that starts off as mildly country-western and then wanders into a spacey, airy, and artsy otherworld. It even comes replete with lyrics bound to raise many an eyebrow, examples including “Jesus is a good name to moan” and the more obviously disturbing “My mom is making sounds like she's making love / Something's going on.” The entire package ends neatly, with the gospel, blues, and call-and-response infused “Sweetest Melody,” which will leave you wondering if Mugison is a creative genius or suffers from a severe case of multiple personality disorder.
