The debut from the young British folk scene's frontrunners
2010 | Label: Glassnote

Mumford & Sons, alongside acts like Noah and the Whale and Laura Marling, are a part of Britain's burgeoning folk scene — a small niche by most standards but Mumford & Sons have nevertheless become one of the year's breakthrough bands — their appeal greatest among the type of listener that gets their new music tips from Grey's Anatomy and whoever it is Dave Matthews ropes in as an opening act.

Fortunately, Mumford's tunes are anything but lachrymose. Frontman Marcus Mumford possesses a huge, tobacco-stained set of pipes that could wipe out a small country, and his band of old-time-y aces manage to deliver pub-ready stompers — even without the aid of a drummer. (Mumford keeps the beat on a bass drum during their raucous live shows.) Tracks like breakout single "The Cave" morph from tender acoustic pop to volcanic anthem and "Little Lion Man" could be appropriated for any number of sloshy, beer-soaked fraternity sing-alongs. Still, a certain British pomp invades tracks like "Timshel" and the brass-heavy "Winter Winds," although there's no denying the haunting, visceral fear aroused in "White Blank Page," which comes on like a sea chanty sung by sailers on their way to a watery grave.

Sigh No More

EMUSIC-02A4284F

The lyrics and themes are not life changing or overly imaginative. However, the individual themes and messages are easy to relate to and the melodies are appealing and rather catchy. The entire album is easy to listen to and requires minimal usage of the skip button. Best of all, it has some serious replay power, including the more popular and highly played tracks.

Great to meet you, Mumford (and Sons)

EMUSIC-027714EE

Really loved the blend of voices, harmonies and instruments. The songs tell stories which, not only can I hear and understand, but identify with. Encore!

IknowIknow

m-andrew

I know many will say these guys are over rated strummers, the latest in a global turn to what we in the US of A call americana or alt-something or another, but please hold your O-Pin-ions until you give this a serious listen. They snuck up on me with their surprisingly catchy hooks and make you think a little bit lyrics. I agree that there are a couple of underdeveloped tunes in there, but over all I heartily recomend this debut offering. (I still believe in the old addage that was passed down from my long gone uncle Plum) buy the original, the first offering. never will their work be more scrutinized, self assessed and every detail adressed. by virtue of my ears and Plum's first law of Exceptional Art i give this baby 4 stars

It DOES grow on you

Clean_Water

At first, "White Blank Page" seemed too earnest, cloying. But I listened to the rest of the album, and heard them on the Grammys with Dylan. This is a strong, expressive collection that DOES grow on you. And I have never once seen "Gray's Anatomy..."

Nice but not great

WyoDan

I don't know what it is. When I listen to this album I feel like I should be listening to The Avett Brothers or Calexico. It's nice stuff but ultimately rather derivative and unimaginative. Lyrics try to be profound but end up wordy and forced. The more I listen, the less I like.

Big Ugly Yellow Couch Radio

By Big Ugly Yellow Couch, eMusic Contributor

Big Ugly Yellow Couch is an acoustic video series run by photographer Donald Rasmussen and writer Carlye Wisel, two goons with an ugly piece of furniture and a relentless desire to help expose unbelievable artists to energetic fans. Stemming from the idea that phenomenal music can be stripped down to its core and remain just as impressive, the duo seek out bands they love-love-love-love, and record stripped-down sessions on a dead old lady's couch they inherited… more »

An eMusic Guide to New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest

By Britt Robson, eMusic Contributor

When it comes to programming, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival gets to have its cake and eat it too. The lineup is distinctively reflective of the region's time-honored musical traditions, but because so many styles are bound up in that history — jazz, blues, funk, soul, gospel and rock, not to mention sub-genres like brass bands, zydeco and feathered Mardi Gras Indian hoe-downs — the fest manages to be both redolent of its… more »
