A rarely heard gem of an opera.
Too often Humperdinck is seen as a 'one trick pony' and although "Hansel und Gretel" is one hell of a 'trick' the comment is unfair. This opera is full of tunes and wonderful orchestration and deserves to be heard a lot more often. Judge it on it's own merits and not in comparison to "Hansel und Gretel" and you will be well pleased. A hidden gem.
