You gotta get this for the exquisite Dido of Simone Kermes. Some "expert" gives this two stars on Amazon. I beg to differ. The singing by Kermes is stellar(almost literally), And worth your credits as well as your time. Five BIG stars!
Dido & Aeneas is a true masterpiece – an early opera – which transcend the story to music, and vice versa. Until listening to this album, my favorite performance was Andrew Parrott’s. With a group of wonderful soloists in the peak the their career, led by Emma Kirkby as Dido, Parrott is able to master the music. This new performance brings a different – and refreshing - interpretive approach to the music, one that focus on the emotion, and is able to be expressive without being flashy. Similar to Parrott’s, the soloists in this production are in their peak with Simone Kermes shining above all in the tragic role of Dido. Every music library should include this performance, in addition to the Parrott’s version.
