I really, really don't get the Avant-Jazz categorization. I moved to Bloomington just after these guys left town, but they were one of the anchors of a still lively scene and I met a couple of them while working for Gulcher Recs. This was the realo midwestern rock underground of youths who knew their Stooges and could properly place them in relation to Captain Beefheart circa mid to late '70's, when "we" were all supposed to be digging the unbelievable mellowness out of LA. Oh and when I say still lively scene, I mean direct lineage to John Wilkes Booze for X, through Zero Boys, Gizmos, Gulcher Recs. etc. This is music as majestic as the sun rising o'er the valley of the Gulch, which we didn't see often. Didn't like to stay up that late. Golly, this is enjoyable!

A lost classic

How could this be classified by emusic as avant-garde jazz? This band ROCKS. Yet they are very strange. To these ears, MX-80 pre-figured the whole Sonic Youth "exploding pop song" dynamic pretty completely, and they're my pick for "obscure band most likely to be considered incredibly important in the coming decades." Download It's Not My Fault, Cover to Cover, Night Rider and Face of the Earth first, you'll be back for the whole bloody thing.
