well worth the listening

Cornelius

This is a great example of late-romanticism in the Russian vein. His work reflect the talents of his teacher, Tchaikovsky, but he offers a new sensibility and works with innovative forms and orchestrations. I've listened to the Oresteia overture again and again, and am continually surprised and pleased. If nothing else, give this one overture a try. I also highly recommend Taneyev's At the Reading of a Psalm. Hunters of new romantic treasures will be pleased with these works.

get the overture as well

while i haven't checked side-by-side the polyansky of tanayev's 4, neeme jarvi's 4 comes as good as advertised. i'm admittedly biased toward russian symphonies, but i couldn't imagine what this version is missing. and the oresteia is phenomenal. i'll try polyansky for 1, 2, and 3.
