Punk was over, hip-hop was in a lull — why not something completely inauthentic?
1991 | Label: Warlock Records

Ha! Their name declared their unoriginality, and the presence of svengali Maurice Starr and beatmaker Arthur Baker gave heft to the claim. This was pure product. “Hey fellas, look who just dropped in,” lead singer Ralph Tresvant says at one point. “It's our producers, Maurice Starr and Michael Jonzun!” Well surprise, surprise. But in 1983, when seven-inch pop singles still fit your turntable, it was hard to argue with the derivative sugar of “Candy Girl” or chirpy funk of “Popcorn Love.” Punk was over, hip-hop was in a lull — why not something completely inauthentic, even if they sounded like the Jackson 5 without a Michael?

But in retrospect, here's another way to look at New Edition: of Maurice Starr's two manufactured boy bands, the various New Kids on the Block went on to be answers to trivia questions; the members of New Edition went on to be Bobby Brown, Bell Biv DeVoe and Tresvant — a window on an era, even if over time it has come to reveal too much.

The Original Boy Band!!!!!

isaacmusicman

I could not stand New Edition back in the days. It took Bobby Brown to leave, Johnny Gill to come in, and for them to record their best album in history in N.E. Heartbreak for me to even want to go back and want to listen to their early stuff. This is where it started, and looking back, now I understand why people liked them. They were talented, and it could not be denied. With songs like "Candy Girl", "Popcorn Love", "Jealous Girl" and even the non-hit "Gotta Have Your Lovin'", whether they were dudded the next Jackson 5 or what, it didn't matter, because they would go on for the next 25 years to make history of their own!!!!!!

Liesie, all their later albums are major label releases - MCA, then later on Bad Boy/Universal. Unless majors ever join emusic, you won't ever see those albums here.

Track 3 on this disc ("Is This The End") is an AWESOME teen R&B ballad. I remember moping around to it after breaking up with some girl whose name I can't remember...thanks, eMusic.

Candy girl.

I'm sorry but the only good song or in this case thing about it is the song candy girl. It sounds like Michael Jackson when he was 5. Very cute. Everyhthing else is horrible.

Some Good Tracks

Give some of the tracks a preview, Michael Jonzun of the Jonzun Crew helped produce this record, and there are some pretty nice electro jams packed in there behind the helium vocals. The liner notes and album art are pretty sweet, look for this record in the $1 bin on vinyl.

Top Soul and R&B

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

R&B is such an overwhelming genre. It lies at the heart of rock 'n 'roll and is somehow separate. It burns brighter, but can go dark. It shimmers and whinnies and roars. It's the sound of struggle and revolution, but also love and charity. Here is more than half a decade of an ever-changing and original American art form. Investigate for yourself. more »

They Say All Music Guide

When Maurice Starr uncovered the talents of a Roxbury vocal group in the early ’80s, he envisioned a second Jackson 5. That was the direction he took New Edition in its early days, and this album includes such overt Jackson 5 ripoffs as “Candy Girl” and the title track. None of the toughness or street touches that emerged on their later material was evident on this slick, pop-oriented session. Ralph Tresvant, Ronald DeVoe, Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, and Bobby Brown were all aged 13 to 15 when this was released. – Ron Wynn
