New York Polyphony firmly thumbs their collective nose at the trend in this kind of music toward closer and closer miked, drier, over-produced sounds and lay down a living performance in a space that hearkens back to the cathedrals in which this music would have originally been performed. The modern pieces work with the old partially because they are based on the older material and partly because the wetter acoustic gives the older music the illusion of the tone clusters and colour tones that the contemporary music makes explicit. These guys also sing the nicest, most elegant chant lines I have heard on CD.
